Abstract

1,133,856. Electro-photographic process for producing printing plates. MINNESOTA MINING & MFG. CO. Sept.21, 1965 [Sept.21, 1964], No.27986/68. Divided out of 1,129,366. Headings G2H and G2M. [Also in Division H1] Lithographic printing plates are produced by imagewise exposing a photo-conductive material comprising a metal support, an oleophilic photoconductive layer and a hydrophilic, liquid-permeable layer and developing by permeating a metal salt solution through the hydrophilic layer and producing a metal image at least at the oleophilic/hydrophilic interface at the exposed areas by electrolytic reduction using the metal support as the cathode bleaching out the metal image and removing the hydrophilic layer at the exposed areas where it has been rendered friable by the formation of the metal image. In the example, silica is used as the hydrophilic layer, silver nitrate is used as the metal salt and the oleophilic layer is a styrene/butadiene copolymer, polystyrene, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. The metal support may be backed with a paper sheet.
