Abstract
1,133,837. Web coating apparatus. BELOIT CORP. 3 Feb., 1966 [12 March, 1965], No. 4823/66. Heading D1L. Pressure loading means for loading a doctor blade 15 associated with a back-up roll 11 about which a web W to be coated is trained. comprises at least one support arm 17, a doctor-back 16 transversely pivoted at 19 to the arm 17 and which carries the blade 15, and means for maintaining a predetermined pressure between the doctor blade and the web, which means comprises independent oppositelyacting loading devices between the support arm 17 and the doctor back 16 operable to exert opposite rotating forces on the doctor back. In the arrangement shown the loading devices comprise fluid actuated diaphragms 82 and 83 acting in one direction and a similar diaphragm 85 acting in the opposite direction. Said diaphragms act on pressure pads 86, 87 attached to the arm 17. The angular position of arm 17 is adjustable relative to frame member 20 by means of a turn buckle 76 to change the angle of the blade 15, which angle may be varied between 40‹ and 60‹ as indicated. The frame 20 is supported on foot 22 and is pivoted thereon at 25 and can be moved by cylinder/piston 61, 62 into the operative position (shown), a threading position (Fig. 2; not shown) and a cleaning position (Fig. 3, not shown). The doctoring means is shown associated with coating apparatus consisting of an applicator roll 12 which may be driven in the same or opposite direction as the web W and rotates in a coating bath 13. The roll 12 is supported by bell crank levers 31 journalled at 32 and having bearing pads 35 engaged by fluid operated diaphragms 36 so as to move the roll to the operative position of Fig. 1 from a threading-up position (Fig. 2, not shown). Adjustable stop means 41-43 is provided for locating the applicator roll in the operative position so that the thickness of the coating applied can be adjusted. The coating bath pan 13 engages with end dams 45, mounted on bearing supports 29, and is in sealing engagement with said dams in the operative and threading-up positions. For cleaning, the pan 13 can be swung away from roll 12 by cylinder/piston 55, 53 to the Fig. 3 (not shown) position.
