Abstract

1,133,604. Coating. JOHN L. ARMITAGE & CO. 10 May, 1966 [1 June, 1965], No. 20712/66. Headings B2E and B2K. A method of coating an article 10 comprises forming on a surface thereof a discontinuous ink layer 12 of predetermined pattern and thereafter applying an upper layer 13 comprising a resinous film-forming material to form a textured pattern over said ink layer, said ink layer and upper layer being selected by the copper plate .test to be compatible with the surface and being applied in such relative quantities that the upper layer is of non- uniform thickness varying subtantially inversely to the thickness of the ink layer. The copper plate test is defined. A basecoat 11 may be applied to the surface of the substrate prior to application of the ink layer. Specified articles are of wood, wood derivatives e.g. chipboard or hardboard, metal e.g. steel or anodised aluminium, paper or plastics materials e.g. polystyrene. Specified basecoats (which may be applied by spraying, electrostatic spraying, roller coating or curtain coating) are alkyd resins, modified alkyd resins, acrylics, lacquers, plenolic resins, epoxy resins and nitro cellulose, many examples being given. Specified inks (which may be applied by gravure plates, silk screen printing and blanket printing) are based on oils, varnishes, alkyd resins, epoxy resins, epoxidised oils and polymeric and monomeric plasticisers, many examples are given. Specified film forming resins for the upper layer (which may be applied by spraying) are maleic modified vinyl resin organosols, cellulose-acetate-butyrate, nitrocellulose, oil-modified alkyds and ureaformaldehyde modified vinyl organosols.
