Abstract

1,133,581. Storing oil above water. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 31 Dec., 1965 [2 Oct., 1964], No. 40196/64. Heading E1H. An installation for storing oil above water comprises a tank 10 which is open at the bottom and has side walls 12 and a top wall 11 of flexible material and which fits within a recess 15 in the ground 16, the side walls of the recess being adapted to carry the hydrostatic loads exerted by the oil, the side walls of the tank extending 'below the interface of the oil 30 and a quantity of water 23 separating the oil from the base of the recess, the arrangement being such 'that rainwater falling on the top of the tank may readily drain away when the tank is full (the top wall 11 being provided with apertured fittings 20 at the upper end of rainwater drainage ducts 21 having ballast weights 22 at their lower open ends). Means (ballast 14 in a beading 13 on the lowermost edge of the side walls 12 are provided to prevent the tank from rising above the top of the recess.
