Abstract

113,354. Hamilton, D. G. March 26, 1917. Cramps.-A cramp for use in glueing together laminae for the manufacture of screw propellers for aircraft and like laminated devices, comprises a base and a presser-bar provided with a series of spring pressing-feet for pressing the work down on to the base, and means for depressing the presser-bar. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the base a is a movable one adapted to rest on a bench &c. and is provided with feet a<1>. The laminations d to be glued together are placed on a plate or carrier c laid loosely on the base a. The presser-bar b, which has a central enlargement b<1>, carries a series of spring feet e, or they might be actual springs, which rest on the work d, and pressure is applied by cams or screws &c., such as rods g pivoted at g<2> to the base and provided with pressure-applying nuts &c. g<1>. An additional pressure bolt f, f<1> is shown at the centre of the propeller boss. The pressing-feet e are shown carried by rods e<2>, the heads of which are in recesses in the undersides of the feet, springs being placed on the rods e<2> as shown. The rods e<2> pass through holes in the bar b and are provided with nuts e<4> on their upper ends. The base a may form part of a bench or other fixed structure instead of being separate and movable as shown. The feet e are shown in Fig. 2 placed in line along the centre of the bar b, and on each side of the central bolt f. When it is desired to set off some of the feet e from the general line they may be mounted adjustably in the bar b. Fig. 10 shows an arrangement in which the rod e<2>, e<2>* carrying the foot is telescopic and its upper end is fixed in a block e<12> slidable in a transverse guide e<13> fixed on the underside of the bar b. A pointer e'‹ on the block e<12> moves over an index on one of the flanges of the guide e<13>, and a set-screw e<11> fixes the block when adjusted. In a modification, the telescopic rod e<2>, e<2>* is carried by an arm pivoted on the underside of the bar b, an index and fixing screw being provided for adjusting the position of the rod and its foot.
