COMBINED PAPER CARRIER. AND GAUGE.
Application filed. Eebruary 25, 1924. Serial No. 694,970.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PAUL F. TAVEL, a resident of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Paper Carriers and Gauges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in combined paper carrier and gauge, which is particularly designed and adapted for use in conjunction or connection with a punching machine, but which may be employed for any purpose where it would operate in an efiicient and practical manner.
One object of my invention is the provision of a mechanism which will carry the paper or other material and which'will present it to the action of the punch or other structure in an absolutely accurate position to insure the highest degree of eiiiciency.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a mechanism which will be manually controlled by a single attendant and which will perform its functions in a rapid and reliable manner and prove a great saving of time, labor and money.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a machine which will convey any desired amount of paper to the punch or other device, which can be adjusted to the finest degree, which can be easily operated andcontrolled by a. single attendant, and which will be simple, strong and durable and inexpensive to manufacture, thus possessing all requisites to produce a practical and efficient mechanism.
With these objects in view my invention consists of a paper carrier and gauge embodying novel features of construction and combination oi? parts, substantially as described and claimed and as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1' represents a top plan view of a combined paper carrier and gauge con structed in accordance with and embodying my invention.
Figure 2 represents an edge view of the paper carrier element of my machine.
Figure 3 represents a detail view of the mechanism for retaining the carrier or carriage in thepropcr adjustment.
Figure 4: represents an end view of the complete machine, and
Figures 5 and 6 representv detail sectional views on an enlarged scale to show impor tant details of my invention.
In the drawings the same numerals are used to indicate the same parts in allthe views. The numeral 1 is a suitable table or bed, which is of the proper and desired size and is supported on suitable legs 2, and for purpose of illustration a punch 3, mounted in a guide, and operated by a cam or eccentric 4-, on a shaft 5, is shown.
It will be understood that no claim for a punch is made herein and'that my machine can be adapted for use in connection with a punch, or in fact with any other means where it would serve its function.
Upon the table is secured the base element or plate 6, which is of elongated or oblong shape and of the desired size, having at one side the pair of arms 7 which are slottedat 8, and have mounted therein the adjusting threaded rods 9, which travel in the studs or posts 10, and have mounted on their'inner extended ends the vertically disposed bevel gears 11, which mesh with the similar horizontally disposed bevel gears 12, to which are connected the hand operated cranks 13, the rotation oi which effects rotation of the threaded rods and naturally moves the base element or plate in or out for adjusting the same to the finest possible degree.
From this construction it will be apparent that the base plate capable of instant manual adjustment and upon said plate is mounted the rail 14, provided at determined points with stops 15, said stopsbeing removable if desired to change their. position on the said rail, and parallel with said rail 14, is a rail 16, having a series of sleeves 17, re ceiving the spring-actuated detents 19, which engage the stops 15, to retain'the paper carrier 20 at the desired adjustment with reference to the punch or other co-operating mechanism.
The paper carrier is of open box like shape and is provided with the pair of rollers-21, which travel within the rail 16, and is also provided with the end roller 22, which moves over the base plate, while at oneend the carrier has a stop plate 23, which is connected to hand operated adjusting screws 24, which adjust the stop plate to insure the paper or other material being in the exact position to insure the proper presentation to the punch, whose relation is shown in-dotted zines in Figure Upon the flange 25, at the inner edge of the carrier is mounted the hand grasp 26, which is pivoted at 27, to the inner ends of the pair of levers 28, fulcrumed at 29, to the flange of the carrier and having their outer ends connected to the actuated detents 19, thus by pressure of the hand on the grasping portion releases the detents 19, and permits the attendant to move the carrier to the desired adjustment or to cause it to engage the desired stop 15, a suitable guard 30 being disposed in proper relation to the detents and operating levers therefor.
The operation of my machine will be readily understood from the drawings taken in connection with the description and I would state that the paper to be punched or operated upon is placed in the carrier and adjusted with relation to the punch and then the carrier is adjusted longitudinally by means of the manually operated and controlled spring actuated detents and is adjusted transversely by manual operation and control of the base plate and the punch can then be put in action and its work will be absolutely reliable, rapid and accurate by means of my carrier and gauge.
The machine is particularly useful in connection with a punching machine where the paper is to be punched with openings in accurate arrangement, but the structure may be adapted for other service and perform its functions in. a practical manner and further the machine is susceptible of many slight changes and modifications which fall within the scope of my claims.
It will be noted that the rail 16 is either made of two parallel sections or it may be slotted to receive the grooved rollers and also allow the movement of the detent carrying means back and forth within the space or slot, as clearly shown.
I claim:

In a combined paper carrier and gauge, the combination of a table or support, a base plate adjustable transversely on said support and a carrier mounted on said base plate and adapted to travel in the base plate and upon the table, said carrier moving and adjustable longitudinally in said base plate.
