To all whom it may cjoncern I Be it known that I, CLARK A. S1eAroos,'a citizen of the United States and a: resident of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and Statejof Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Joggers for laper-Folding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to paper folding machines and more particularly to the devices known as Joggers or paper straighteners It is the object of my invention to provide a paper straightening and gaging device of simple and inexpensive construction, which may be quickly and easilyadjusted to different positions so as to accommodate sheets of varying sizes, and having a special form of driving connection by which the straigh the straightening and gaging devices .are

Said arm extends inwardly from the pivot-pin, its inner end is turned upwardly and forked, and between the forked ends is revolubly mounted the ing member 27 ,which passes inwardly from c the arm and around a small pulley carried on the end of a lever 28, thence outwardly and around a pulley 29 mounted on the standard 8, and thence extends inwardly and has'its other end connected with the outer edge of the plate 21. The lever 28 is fulcrumed on a lug extending out from the side of the frame-member 2 and its lower end lies adjacent to a cam 30 carried on the driving shaft'5. On said end of the lever is-a roller 31 which is held in engagement with the cam by means of a spring 32, connected with the lever and the frame, as shown. When the flexible connecting member 27 is not placed in tension by movement of the lever 28 the weight of the roller 25 causes it to drop into engagement with the transverse belt 11, or, if a sheet ofpaper is being conveyed over the plate 21 by the carrier-belts, to press said paper down into engagement with the transverse belt. When the flexible connection is placed in tension by movement of the lever 28 the roller-arm is swung upwardly, and paper carried by the belts 3 can pass freely under it.
In the operation of the mechanism the belts 3 and the transverse belt 11 are each moved continuously in the directions indicated in the drawings. The plate 21 is adjusted transversely by turning the threaded rod 16, so that the inner side of the guide-flange 22 is at the position to which it is desired to gage the edges of the sheets of paper being conveyed by the belts 3; The lever 28iis actuated intermittently by the cam 30 so that the flexible connection 27 is alternately placed in tension and the tension relaxed.
When the tension on the member 27 is relaxed and the roller 25 thereby permitted to drop down, the paper is pressed against the belt 11 and moved transversely thereby until its outer edge is brought into engagement with the guide-flange 22. The parts are so proportioned that after the edge of the paper is brought to engagement with the guide-flange the tendency of the belt 11 to move it farther will be insuflicient to cause the paper to wrinkle or bulge upwardly. Should the paper tend to'bulge upward between the roller and guide-flange, it is held down by the portion of the roller-arm adjoining the forked end thereof.
' It should be especially noted with reference to the flexible connection for actuating the roller-arm, that by the peculiar arrangement of the cord 27, when the position of the plate 21 is changed the driving connection is also changed automatically and the timing of the movement of the roller-arm is not changed. Thus, if the plate be moved either inwardly or outwardly, the ends of the cord attached to the plate and to the arm 26 are both moved in the same direction and the cord passes around the pulleys on the lever 28 and standard 8 to permit the movement. By this meansthe operator is enabled to change the position of the gage and straightener even while the machine is running, the crank 18 being turned with one hand while the other hand is used to lift the upperportions of .the belts 3 over the roller 25, roller-arm, guide-flange and the lugs 23, when the transverse movement given to the plate is suchthat the said parts must move past any of the carrier-belts.
Now, having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with carrier-belts, of a stationary frame, a gage, means for adjusting the position of the gage transversely of the carrier-belts, conveying means for moving paper transversely of the carrier-belts toward the gage, a pressing device carried on the gage and adapted to engage paper on the carrier-belts to hold the same against said conveying means, an intermittentlymoving actuating-lever for, said pressing device, and a unitary flexible element slidably engaging the frame and connecting the actuating-lever and pressing device so as to transmit the movements of the former to parts slidably connected with the actuating lever and the frame, for the purpose set forth.
