A process for producing a non-foraminous fibrous sheet material comprises subjecting a fibrous web on a support member to the action of a columnar stream of non-compressible fluid issuing from an orifice, said stream having a momentum-flux of at least 6 kg-m/sec<SP>2</SP>-cm<SP>2</SP> at the point of impingement on the web. The web and orifice preferably move relative to each other and the velocity of the stream at the orifice is preferably greater than 6000 cm/sec. The material so produced comprises a non-foraminous non- woven fibrous sheet characterised in that the fibres or filaments therein are so entangled with other fibres or filaments therein that (a) the impenetrability rating I is at least 0.5 and (b) the entanglement frequency f, is at least 26/in, both being measured when the web is in the bond free state. The fibrous sheet is further characterised in that the entanglement completeness C is at least 0.7 the 45/90/135 number is at least 10, and the structural measure of fibre entanglement S is at least 0.1. The weight of the sheet is preferably not more than 170 gm/m<SP>2</SP>. Various other characterisations are described. Each characterisation is defined in the body of the specification.
