Abstract

A harvesting machine comprises a cutting or pick-up mechanism, said mechanism having at least two adjacent portions mounted for pivotal movement relative to each other, and the lower sides of the portions having end parts which are adjacent each other in the working position of the portions, a joining means being provided that is between the portions in their working positions and that carries a member which member, in said working position of the portions, serves to guide crop into the machine. As illustrated the harvesting machine is a combine which comprises two header portions each including a framework 15-17 (Fig. 7) supported on an elevator housing 5 and movable relative thereto about an axis afforded by pins 13, 19 by a hydraulic ram. The joining means is constituted by a triangularly shaped element 33 attached to the elevator housing and the member is a detachable tapering portion 38. Each header portion comprises an auger 44 supported at its outer end in side wall 31, and at its inner end by a beam 52 (Fig. 6), the auger further including reciprocating tines 57. Each portion has a strip 41 of elastic material which, in the operative position, contacts the element 33 to form a seal therewith. A reel 70 supported by members 67, 69 is resiliently mounted on rod (72) by a spring (75) (Fig. 2 not shown) for vertical movement by a hydraulic ram 73. Drive is transmitted via shaft 77, telescopic shafts 82, gear boxes 83 and chain and sprocket mechanisms. The header portions and elevator housing are movable vertically by hydraulic rams 98, and the height of the cutter bars above the ground is also controlled by rams acting through ground engaging wheels 63. When the portions are pivoted, relative to housing 5 strips fixed relative to the housing engage plates 76B thus to force the wheels against the bias of springs (75) towards the base of their corresponding portions.
