1,132,784. Purifying aromatic or alicyclic dianhydrides. GELSENBERG BENZIN A.G. 4 Feb., 1966 [5 Feb., 1965], No. 4988/66. Heading C2C. Crude aromatic or alicyclic carboxylic dianhydrides are purified by extraction with an aromatic hydrocarbon capable of forming an adduct with the dianhydride, at or below the boiling point of the hydrocarbon, at normal pressure or at an elevated pressure, and then a hot filtration is effected, from the filtrate of which an adduct of the aromatic dianhydride is crystallized out upon cooling and isolated by filtration whereupon the adduct is converted into the dianhydride by removal of the extraoting agent. Typical aromatic dianhydrides are pyromellitic dianhydride, naphthalene-tetracarboxylic dianhydrides, diphenyl-tetracarboxylic dianhydrides, benzophenone-tetracarboxylic dianhydrides, cyclopentane-tetracarboxylic dianhydrides and bis-(dicarboxyphenyl)- sulphone dianhydrides. Suitable extracting agents are benzene, toluene, o-xylene, p-xylene or higher alkylated aromatic hydrocarbons or mixtures thereof. The extracting agent may be removed by heating. The pyromellitic dianhydride may be derived from oxidation of a 1,2,4,5-tetra-alkyl benzene.
