Abstract

1,226,695. Purification of aromatic dianhydrides. RHONE-POULENC S.A. 9 May, 1969 [9 May, 1968], No. 23869/69. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] A process for purifying aromatic dianhydrides of the formula wherein R represents a tetravalent aromatic radical, comprises contacting the dianhydride with dioxane in a heterogenous phase, and isolating and then decomposing the complex so formed to obtain substantially pure dianhydride. The dianhydrides of pyromellitic acid, azobenzene - 3,3<SP>1</SP>,4,4<SP>1</SP>- tetracarboxylic acid and azoxybenzene - 3,3<SP>1</SP>,4,4<SP>1</SP> - tetracarboxylic acid are purified by this process. The invention also comprises an equimolecular complex of dioxane and an aromatic dianhydride of the above formula.
