Abstract

1,132,541. Polyester-aminoplast impregnated paper laminates; moulding decorative articles. WHITTINGHAM & MITCHEL Ltd. 1 Feb., 1966 [3 Feb., 1965], 4702/65. Headings B5A and B5N. A method of forming an article having a surface which is relatively resistant to abrasion on a base of moulded polyester-resin-based plastics material comprises impregnating one surface of a sheet of fibrous material e.g. paper to part of the depth of the sheet, with urea and/ or melamine formaldehyde resin, and moulding a base of polyester-resin-based plastics material directly against the opposite surface of the sheet at such a temperature and pressure as to cause the polyester resin to penetrate part of the thickness of the sheet and so bond the moulded base to the sheet. The polyester resin preferably incorporates glass and other filling materials. In the examples:-(1) tissue paper impregnated with melamine-formaldehyde resin is cut to size and placed in the die cavity of a mould tool, a sheet of tissue paper impregnated on its printed surface with a mixture of urea- and melamine-formaldehyde resin is then placed in the cavity with its printed surface down, a composition of a thermosetting polyester resin incorporating glass and other fillers is placed in the mould and heat and pressure applied; (2) the two sheets of paper as in (1) are partially cured under pressure and heat and moulded with a polyester as in (1); (3) as in (1) omitting the first layer of tissue paper and (4) the impregnated printed paper is pressed between heated platens and moulded with polyester resin as in (3).
