Abstract
1,132,265. Emulsion copolymerization of acrylonitrile. MICHELIN & CIE (COMPAGNIE GENERALE DES ETABLISSEMENTS MICHELIN). 24 Jan., 1966 [25 Jan., 1965], No. 3116/66. Headings C3G and C3P. In a process for copolymerizing acrylonitrile in emulsion the polymerization is effected in the presence of (a) an emulsifier, (b) 0À2-5%, based on the weight of monomers, of an organic polyhalide of formula C n X 2n+2 , where n is 1, 2 or 3 and X represents Cl and/or Br, (c) a copper compound capable of supplying 150- 1000 mg. of ionic copper per 100 litres of emulsion, (d) 0À1-5%, based on the weight of monomers, of a water-soluble reducing agent capable of at least partially reducing the copper compound to the metallic state, (e) 0À01-0À1%, based on the weight of monomers, of a Redox adjuvant, and (f) less than 1%, based on the weight of monomers of free ammonia. Specified components are (a) oleic acid (apparently in ammonium salt form) and its sodium salt, (b) carbon tetrachloride, (c) copper sulphate, (d) hydrazine hydrate, and (e) polyphenols, aminophenols, hydroquinone, oxyhydroquinone, chlorhydroquinone, gallic acid, pyrogallol and iconogen (1 -amino-2-oxynaphthyl-6- sulphonic acid). The acrylonitrile may be copolymerized with one or more compounds selected from styrene, butadiene, isoprene, chloroprene and vinyl chloride. In one Example, acrylonitrile is copolymerized with styrene in the presence of a polybutadiene latex. An ABS resin may also be produced by copolymerizing acrylonitrile in the presence of the elastomer latex described in Example 5 of French Specification 1,324,321, i.e. a butadiene-styrene copolymer latex.
