1330990 Aqueous suspension polymerization stabilizers AQUITAINE TOTAL ORGANICO 31 Dec 1971 [31 Dec 1970] 60947/71 Headings C3G and C3P Ethylenically unsaturated monomers are polymerized in aqueous suspension in the presence of a suspension stabilizer which is an inorganic coprecipitate obtained by precipitating a mixture of soluble phosphate and carbonate compounds containg at least 1 gram-ion of carbonate to 3 gram-ions of phosphate, using a water-soluble salt of a metal from Group IIA or IIB of the Periodic Table (that used on p. 7 of the Classification Key), or of aluminium or iron. The metal salt is preferably added in a quantity such as to provide 10 added metal ions per 6 phosphate ions and 1 added metal ion per carbonate ion. The preferred carbonates and phosphates are the alkali metal compounds. Examples of the metal salt added are Ba, Mg, Ca, Al or Fe nitrate, halides or acetate. The precipitate may be prepared separately, in the polymerization mixture before polymerization has begun, or during polymerization but before 60 % conversion of manomers to polymer. Other ingredients of the polymerization are conventional initiators, surfactants, chain terminators, &c. Particular monomers referred to are styrene, chlorostyrenes, alkyl styrenes, vinyl naphthalenes, vinyl pyridine, acrylonitrile, alkyl acrylates and methacrylates, acrylic and methacrylic acid, vinyl and vinylidene halides, vinyl acetate and propionate, acrylamide, methacrylamide, butadiene and isoprene. Examples exemplify the polymerization of styrene, styrene/methyl methacrylate, styrene/acrylonitrile, styrene/polybutadiene and vinyl chloride, using various coprecipitates of sodium carbonate and phosphate, with calcium chloride.
