Abstract

1,132,157. Jet propelled aircraft. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 19 April, 1966 [19 April, 1965], No. 17102/66. Heading B7G. The outlet nozzle 30 of an aircraft jet engine 18 is in the form of an elbow rotatable into cruise or lift positions on an angled ring bearing 28 carried by the aircraft and is arranged to carry a fairing 35 having a contoured edge 36 adapted to mate, during cruising, with a complementary edge formed on the skin 24 of the aircraft. The optimum contour 36 is stated to be dependent on three requirements. The first requires that all points on the contour 36 at the same radius from the axis of rotation of the nozzle must lie in the same plane normal to the axis. The second requires that the bend 32 in the nozzle should not foul the complementary contour on the skin during rotation of the nozzle and the third requires that the forward edge of the contour should not protrude excessively above the aircraft skin when the nozzle is rotated, in particular to the lift position, Fig. 5 (not shown).
