Abstract

1,132,153. Rifle hand guard. RHEINMETALL G.m.b.H. 4 Feb., 1966 [19 Feb., 1965], No. 5001/66. Heading F3C. A hand guard for a rifle comprises an outer shield member which may be in two parts la, 1b of heat insulating material and an inner metal shield member 2 located in the outer shield member and spaced therefrom by an air gap 14, the inner shield member being retained in the outer shield member by the inherent resiliency of the inner shield member. The free ends of the inner shield member are turned outwardly and are housed in grooves 11 in the inner surface of the outer shield member. A ferrule is provided at each end of the outer shield member to hold the two halves together (Fig. 1, not shown). The inner shield member is positioned in the outer shield member by an abutment formed within the outer shield member. Ventilation openings are provided in the inner shield member by forming a series of apertures adjacent the free ends of the inner shield member or by forming recesses in the free ends (Fig. 3, not shown). The inner shield member may also be formed with raised peripheral corrugations for strengthening purposes. An air space 15 is also provided between the inner shield member and the barrel 7 of the rifle.
