Abstract

1,132,042. Boots &c. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. 5 Jan., 1966 [7 Jan., 1965], No. 668/65. Heading A3B. A progressive lasting machine includes a rotatable updraw cylinder 10, a pressure applying member 12 which guides the lasting margin into contact with the cylinder 10, presses it against the cylinder 10 and then folds it towards the insole, an adhesive applying-nozzle 16 and a wiper roll 14. The updraw cylinder 10 is rotated by an electric motor and has helical flutes 18 and ribs 20. The pressure applying member 12 is urged towards the cylinder 10 by a pneumatic piston and cylinder 30 and movement of the member 12 away from the cylinder 10 caused by the introduction of upper material between them causes adhesive to be supplied to the nozzle 16. The nozzle 16 is connected by a duct 56 to a pressurized container 62 of molten adhesive, supply of adhesive being controlled by a valve 66 operated by a piston and cylinder 72. The wiper roll 14 has a helical rib 54, is rotated by a flexible drive shaft (not shown) and is carried on one arm of a U-shaped bracket 38 pivoted to the machine frame at 40, a pneumatic piston and cylinder 50 urging the wiper roll 14 towards the shoe bottom.
