A spanner comprises at least one opening 2 closed at its ends and having its edges shaped to provide a plurality of part-hexagonal or part-ring nut-engaging portions. The spanner may be forged, or pressed with a dished centre and upstanding rim 6. An open-jaw spanner may be formed at one or both ends, the body may be cranked to bring the openings 2 into two different planes, and removable inserts may be provided with different sized or shaped indentations 5. It is stated that a fixed or detachable screwdriver part may be incorporated.
