A tap selector St with stationary contacts 1, 2, 3 (Fig. 2, not shown) of each phase secured alternately in two horizontal switch planes on vertical insulating bars (33, Fig. 3, not shown) and preselected alternately step-by-step by switch bridges 35, 36 connected to the power changeover switch L through stationary slip contact rings 31, 32 and moved in a circular path, has each pre-selection step divided into two half-steps so that in the rest position of switch L, the unswitched bridge lies above or below the switched bridge and is connected thereto by a slip contact 37 secured to one bridge, e.g. 36, so that all contacts of switch L are at the same potential. One step comprises, for example, a first half during which bridge 36 pivots to connect with contact 2, an intermediate stage during which switch L changes over from contact 11 to contact 12, and a second half during which bridge 35 pivots to a position above 36. These half-steps and intermediate stage are produced by superposed Geneva wheels (41, 42, Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) driven by a two-armed pin wheel (43) provided with blocking devices (461, 452); or by side-by-side Geneva wheels driven by a single-armed cam wheel therebetween provided with a blocking device (Fig. 8, not shown); or by side-by-side pin wheels driven by a cam wheel therebetween provided with two cams and a blocking device (Fig. 10, not shown). The cam wheels may be driven through worm gearing.
