Abstract
1,131,736. Glass-metal seals. INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTS Ltd. 30 Aug., 1967 [30 Aug., 1966], No. 38646/66. Heading C1M. [Also in Division G1] A nickel electrode lead wire 1 is assembled into the open end 5 of a glass capillary tube 4 by means of a loop or kink surrounded by a globule 2 of a thermosetting resin filled with at least 10% of a powdered non-metallic material, such as silica, to reduce the water transfer factor of the resin and the wire 1 and tube 4 are sealed by a layer 6 of a thermosetting resin. The formation of the globule 2 of resin may be assisted by vibrations along the wire 1. The second layer 6 of resin may contain a small amount of the filler material. When filled with mercury, the assembly, which may have the other end of the capillary sealed as in 1,131,735, forms an electrochemical cell for use as an elapsed time indicator. To assist the sealing, the wire may be etched as by nitric acid and the end of the capillary tube roughened.
