Abstract

1,131,265. Acoustic wave devices. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 1 Sept., 1967 [8 Sept., 1966; 11 May, 1967], Nos. 40130/66 and 21943/67. Heading H3U. An acoustic wave device for propagating surface waves, i.e. waves having both longitudinal and shear mode components, comprises a body 2 of propagating medium, e.g. yttrium aluminium garnet, having a surface discontinuity to produce reflection of the surface wave without introducing mode conversion. The discontinuity may take the form of one or more slots 1, Fig. 1a, filled with a material 3 of different acoustic impedance. In another embodiment (Fig. lb, not shown) the discontinuity is formed by a semi-circular groove and this groove may be filled with a material of different acoustic impedance (Fig. 1c, not shown). In other embodiments (Figs. 1d, 1e, not shown) the discontinuity is formed by raised lips on the surface of the body 2, which lips may be formed by the material of the body itself or by material of a different acoustic impedance. Applications of the device functioning as a resonator, a filter, a power divider and a directional coupler are described with reference to Figs. 2-5 (not shown). In a further embodiment shown in the drawing filed with Provisional Specification 21943/67, a surface wave transmission path 1 is formed by parallel grooves 3, 4 in a propagating medium 2. The groove 4 has a circular portion 4a with a concentric groove 5 forming a resonator, the circumferential length of the resonator being equal to an integral number of wavelengths of the acoustic surface wave so that a standing wave exists therein. A transducer for imparting surface waves to the propagating medium 2 is described with reference to Fig. 6 (not shown), this transducer comprising evaporated cadmium sulphide layers on the surface of the medium, the layers being arranged in two arrays, one array producing the longitudinal mode components and the other the shear mode components.
