Abstract
692,591. Wave-guides. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 14, 1951 [Dec. 21, 1950], No. 31131/50. Class 40 (viii). A wave-guide attenuator comprises a length of cylindrical guide having a stub guide of rectangular cross-section connected thereto, the longitudinal axis of the stub being perpendicular to, and its long side being parallel with, the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical guide, and the stub guide terminating in a matched load. As shown, waves from a transmitter 1 are led through a rectangular guide 2. The attenuator consists of three lengths 4, 5, and 6 of circular section guide. The length 5 bears a stub 9 with load 10, and is mounted to rotate with respect to the other sections at flanged joints 7. The rectangular guide 2 causes the transmitted waves to be plane polarized and thus rotation of section 5 varies the amount of energy which branches off into guide 9 and is absorbed in load 10. Further, a metal strip 11 is placed in section 15 so that the output waves are polarized in a plane that rotates with section 5 and thus a varying amount of energy is dissipated in branch 12 and load 13 attached to section 6. The load 3 connected to the attenuator by a further rectangular guide 2 receives a proportion cos A of the original energy where A is the angle of rotation of section 5. If desired the apparatus may be made symmetrical by adding a stub and load to section 4 and providing loaded stubs on each side of strip 11 m section 5.
