Abstract

[Also in Divisions D1 and G3] In sliver drawing apparatus 1, 2, 4 the sliver is passed through a funnel condenser 5 mounted on leaf springs 6 so that the movement of the guide in the direction of sliver travel is proportional to the tension in the sliver and therefore to the thickness of the sliver. The movement of the guide is automatically measured and the speed of rollers 4 changed in accordance to regulate the thickness of the sliver. The movement of the condenser may be measured by: - (1) having on the leaf springs strips whose resistances vary with their length; these are contained within a circuit and emit signals as the leaf spring bends; (2) mounting on the condenser an armature which moves between a pair of coils or condenser plates contained within a circuit; (3) arranging that movement of the condenser compresses a Piezo-electric device; (4) arranging that movement of the condenser shields a photo-electric cell. The signals from the above arrangements are amplified and operate draft regulating means.
