Circulating or passing fluids through materials.-Relates to apparatus for dyeing textile fibres, and for after treatment with washing or other liquid and with oxidizing or drying gases, and consists in providing means for rendering uniform the flow of the liquid or gases through the mass of fibrous material. Means also are provided for ascertaining the progress of the treatment and the temperature of the liquid used. The material to be treated is placed in a dyeing-chamber 52 and is compressed between a fixed bottom plate 46 and an adjustable top plate 50, the plates 46, 50 being provided with parallel gratebars 47 separated by openings 49, Fig. 3, and carrying upwardly and downwardly inclined cones or pyramids 48. Beneath the dyeing- chamber 52 is situated a liquid-supplying chamber 53 provided with a steam pipe 65, and a lower converging chamber 54 containing a number of downwardly-converging cones or pyramids 68 supported by diamond-shaped bars 69. A centrifugal pump 21, connected by valved pipes with a dye-dissolving tank, a water supply, and a liquid-reserve reservoir 39 in communication with the upper portion of the dyeing- chamber 52, maintains a constant upward flow of dyeing, washing, or other liquid through the apparatus. The material may be treated with oxygen or air for oxidizing or drying by opening a gas-supply pipe 26 or a pipe 25 connected to a gas-compressor, and applying a vacuum or suction pump to the top of a converging chamber 51 adapted to be secured above the dyeing-chamber 52, and containing a series of converging cones or pyramids 66. The air or oxygen may be heated before its introduction into the apparatus. A sample of the material being treated is placed in an apparatus 55, which is a smaller reproduction of the larger apparatus, and is examined from time to time to ascertain the progress of the treatment. The temperature of the liquid used is indicated by a thermometer 62 in a chamber 61 communicating with the chamber 53. The upper converging chamber 51 may be replaced by a dome-shaped top, the cones or pyramids 66 being omitted.
