Abstract

1,130,933. Treatment head for electrotherapy. L. B. SMITH. 3 Oct., 1966 [11 Oct., 1965; 29 April, 1966], No 44121/66. Heading A5R. A treatment head for applying electromagnetic energy comprises a hollow housing 18 in which is supported a radiating member 20 and a primary coil 28 supplying energy to the member 20 from an electrotherapeutic supply, the primary coil being flat, loop-shaped and parallel to the radiating member 20, and the member 20 being formed as a spiral in one plane and flat, the width of at least part of the member 20 being greater than half the pitch of the spiral. As shown, the treatment head includes dielectric laminates 52, 54 supporting the radiating member and the primary coil in the housing, leads 34, 36 connecting the primary coil to an electric pulse circuit having a frequency of 27 Mc/s., and a tuning condenser connected across the radiating member 20. The housing may be of metal with a dielectric cover 22 and the radiating member 20 is also of metal and may be formed by painting, spraying, or printing, on the surface of the dielectric 52. The tuning condenser 38 may be positioned outside the housing 18 and the separation between the member 20 and the primary coil may be adjustable. In an alternative embodiment (Figure 7, not shown), the member 20 and the primary coil 28 are arranged on the opposite surfaces of a single dielectric (64) and a shield (66) is provided between the dielectric and the condenser. The member 20 may be in the form of an oblong spiral (Figure 8, not shown) and the width of the spiral may vary from the centre of the spiral out towards its periphery (Figures 6, 12, not shown), As in Figures 9, 10, 11, 15, and 16 (not shown), the member 20 may be secured to plastics supporting members (70) which are shaped to radiate from the centre of the spiral, the member 20 being held to the supporting members by plastics webs (68) interwoven with the coils of the spiral. Bolt heads provide protuberances on the member 20.
