Abstract

1,130,583. Arcing-preventing in switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 27 May, 1966 [2 June, 1965], No. 23501/65. Heading H1N. An arrangement for switching an A.C. supply comprises two switches 4, 5 connected in parallel and a rectifier 2, 3 in series with each switch, the rectifiers being oppositely poled and each switch being operated during a halfcycle in which its series rectifier is non-conducting. A sensing network 13 is connected across the parallel circuit and provides an output at 20 to AND gates 14, 16 when the voltage at point 8 is above that at point 7. The network 13 also provides an output at 21 to AND gates 15, 17 when the voltage at point 8 is below that at point 7. When a " close " control signal is applied to a terminal 19, the gates 16, 17 provide output signals on the appropriate half cycles to cause latching circuits 11, 12 to energize the operating coils 9, 10 of the switches 4, 5. Similarly when an " open" control signal is provided at a terminal 18, the gates 14, 15 provide output signals on the appropriate half cycles to the latching circuits 11, 12 to deenergize the operating coils 9, 10 of the switches 4, 5.
