Abstract

1,130,541. Substituted propionamides and propionitriles. MERCK & CO. Inc. 22 Oct., 1965 [27 Oct., 1964], No. 44887/65. Heading C2C. Novel compounds of the Formula (I) (wherein each R 1 is H, C 1-5 alkyl or C 2-6 alkanoyl, or both are joined to form -CH 2 -; and R 2 is C 1-5 alkyl; and the formulae depict the D-isomers only) are prepared by contacting compounds of the Formula (II) which do not contain free phenolic hydroxy groups with ammonia, and are converted to compounds of the Formula (III) by reaction with a dehydrating agent. In the reaction with ammonia acylated. phenol groups may be hydrolysed, and in the dehydration reaction if it is conducted with an acid anhydride free phenol groups are acylated These may subsequently be saponified. The D-propionitriles thus produced may be racemized by the process claimed in the Specification 1,130,542. Starting materials of the Formula (II) are prepared by reaction of D-α-methyl-#-(3,4- dihydroxyphenyl)-alanine or its O-esters or -ethers with an alkanoic acid anhydride.
