Abstract

1,130,542. Racemization of α-acylamino-α- methyl - # - (3,4 - disubstituted phenyl) - propionitriles. MERCK & CO. Inc. 22 Oct., 1965 [27 Oct., 1964], No. 6922/68. Divided out of 1,130,541. Heading C2C. D-propionitriles of the formula (wherein one R 1 is H, C 1-5 alkyl or C 2-6 alkanoyl and the other R 1 is C 2-5 alkyl or C 2-6 alkanoyl; and R 2 is C 1-5 alkyl) are racemized by contact with cyanide ions in dimethyl sulphoxide. Acyloxy groups may be hydrolysed during the process or subsequently. The products may be resolved and the separated L-isomer hydrolysed to the valuable L-α-methyl-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-alanine.
