Abstract

1,130,176. Coating surfaces. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 7 Dec., 1965 [7 Dec., 1964], No. 51884/65. Heading B2K. Thermoplastic polyarylene polyether substrates are coated with a metallic layer covering at least a portion of at least one surface and a protective covering top coat of a polymeric material, the thermoplastic polyarylene polyether comprising recurring units having the formula:- wherein E is the residuum of a dihydric phenol and E' is the residuum of a benzenoid compound having an inert electron withdrawing group in at least one of the positions ortho and para to the valence bonds, and where both of the said residual are valently bonded to the ether oxygens through aromatic carbon atoms. There may also be a polymeric base layer between the polyether and the metallic layer. The polyether may have a heat distortion point at 264 p.s.i. of at least 350‹F. After application of the top coat the product may be baked at about 300‹F. and the base coat may also be baked at this temperature before application of the metal layer. The metal layer may be applied by vacuum metallizing or cathode-sputtering and the metals may be aluminium and alloys thereof, silver, gold, lead, zinc, chromium, nickel, copper, tin, iron and platinum. The polymeric base coat and top coat, which may be the same or different, may be of natural polymers or synthetic thermoplastic or thermosetting polymers. Exemplified are asphalt, bitumen, congo gums, japan, pitch, resin oil, rosin, rosin oil, rubber, shellac, nitrocellulose, cellulose esters, cellulose ethers, polyvinyl halides, aorylic polymers, styrene polymers, polyamides, olefin polymers, halogenated olefin polymers, synthetic rubbers, silicone polymers, polycarbonates, polyhydroxyethers, alkyd polymers, modified alkyd polymers, epoxide polymers, urethane polymers, phenol-formaldehyde polymers, melamine-formaldehyde polymers, ureaformaldehyde polymers, vegetable oil polymers and coumarone-indene polymers. Suitable solvents are listed for these polymers. The coating may be applied by spray coating, flow coating, dip coating and roller coating. Fillers colourants, anti-oxidizing agents, modifiers and extenders may be added to the polyether.
