In a modification of the sterilizing autoclave of the main specification, the thermostatically controlled valve means for connecting the water tank, water-chamber and water-heating compartment are replaced by valve means (e.g. solenoid-actuated two way cocks) and a timer is incorporated which controls the process and determines the minimum length of the sterilizing cycle. The valve means, if electrically actuated, may be controlled by the timer or may be operable by a manually actuated switch, e.g. one which operates as the door of the sterilizing compartment closes.
