Abstract

[Also in Divisions B5 and E2] A thermoplastics bag has opposite sides 17, 18 each formed by extrusion of a flexible thermoplastics sheet simultaneously with a flexible thermoplastics bead 33a, 33b integral with the sheet, the pair of beads extending along the respective sides adjacent the bag opening so as to be parallel to one another and having permanently magnetizable material embedded along their lengths and at least one being permanently magnetized so that the beads attract one another and thus constitute a fastener for the bag. The opposite sides of the bag can be formed from separate sheets which are subsequently joined together, alternatively the opposite sides are integral with one another in which case they are formed by the extrusion of a single flexible thermoplastic sheet simultaneously with the pair of flexible thermoplastic beads integral with the sheet, the sheet then being joined along its edges so as to form the bag. The permanently magnetizable material can be a wire or it can be in the form of discrete particles. When a single sheet is used it can be extruded so as to be tubular in cross-section, the beads being extruded at the same time, after which the sheet is slit longitudinally between the beads. A die is shown in Fig. 2, having a cylindrical bore 51 through which molten thermoplastic material 54 is forced, a mandrel 56 being situated concentrically within the bore 51 and the die having a passage 61 in its wall through which molten thermoplastic material containing magnetizable particles is forced into the die. A modification is described in which wire is forced into the die instead of the material containing the particles. When both beads are magnetized they are magnetized so that the facing parts of the beads have opposite magnetic polarities.
