Abstract

1,128,869. Hydroxy ethyl esters of benzene dicarboxylic acids. GELSENBERG BENZIN A.G. 4 April, 1967 [9 April, 1966], No. 15412/67. Heading C2C. Mono- or bis-hydroxyethyl esters of benzene dicarboxylic acids are prepared by reacting a benzene dicarboxylic acid in the presence of water and, as catalyst, 5 to 25 mole per cent (based on the acid) of a quaternary ammonium salt and/or quatemary ammonium base, with ethylene oxide, the reaction being carried out in a solvent or suspension agent for the acid and at atmospheric pressure or at an excess pressure of 1 to 25 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> The process is preferably effected at 40‹ to 75‹ C. and suitable solvents or suspension agents are polar compounds. In examples mixtures of mono- and bis-hydroxyethyl terephthalates are obtained by reacting ethylene oxide with terephthalic acid in presence of benzyltrimethylammonium hydroxide or anion exchange resins as catalysts.
