Abstract

1366373 3,5-Dialkyl pyridlines BAYER AG 14 Sept 1971 [17 Sept 1970] 42818/71 Heading C2C 3,5-Dialkyl pyridines in which the alkyl groups are methyl or ethyl are prepared by reacting 1,1,1-trimethylol ethane and/or 1,1,1- trimethylol propane with ammonia, monomethylamine or dimethylamine or a mixture thereof in the presence of water and an acid catalyst for 2 to 20 hours at 240-320‹ C. and 40-200 atms., separating the product into an aqueous phase and a non-aqueous phase and recycling the aqueous phase to the reactor. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of a water-insoluble apolar solvent, e.g. petrol. Suitable acid catalysts are, for example, ammonium sulphate, methylammonium sulphate, and sulphonic acids and their ammonium salts.
