Abstract

1344602 Hydroquinone UPJOHN CO 10 April 1972 [16 April 1971] 16431/72 Heading C2C A process for producing hydroquinone comprises reacting (i) a phenol of the formula where R taken alone is hydrogen, C 1-8 alkyl or aryl, R<SP>1</SP> taken alone represents hydrogen and R and R<SP>1</SP> taken together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached represent 1-cycloalkenyl from 5-7 carbon atoms inclusive with (ii) a peroxide selected from the group consisting of hydrogen peroxide and a hydrocarbyl hydroperoxide in the presence of an inert solvent and a catalytic amount of a strong acid having a pK less than about 1À0 which is not oxidized by said peroxide and isolating hydroquinone from the resulting mixture comprising hydroquinone and the corresponding ketone of the formula R-CO-CH 2 -R<SP>1</SP>. The phenol starting material may be obtained by condensing phenol and a ketone of the formula R-CO-CH 2 -R<SP>1</SP> in the presence of acid to obtain the corresponding bisphenol and distilling said bisphenol in the presence of alkali metal hydroxide to yield a mixture of phenol and the desired starting material. The phenol and ketone R-COCH 2 -R<SP>1</SP> generated as by-products may be reused in a subsequent cycle. Examples are furnished.
