Apparatus for determining the relationship between temperature and depth of water contains means for initiating the measuring cycle when a probe, launched from a ship, touches the surface of the water. The system is prepared by operating switches 148 and 51 (Fig. 2) whereby relays A, B and C are energized. A 'LAUNCH' signal is transmitted via the changed-over contacts, and when the probe strikes the water a path is completed between an electrode 155 on the probe and an electrode 190 on the ship, causing transistor 152 to conduct. This short-circuit relay A which falls, followed by relay B, whereupon a recorder chart is driven, and relay D is energized to connect the thermistor R56 into a bridge circuit, whose unbalance is amplified at 122 and fed to the recorder. The resistance of the two-wire cable connecting the thermistor to the bridge is represented by resistors R60, R62 in adjacent arms of the bridge, substantially compensating for their change in resistance with temperature. Before launch, the system is calibrated for several discrete temperatures by selecting one of the predetermined resistors 140, 141, 142 to replace the thermistor R56 in the measuring bridge. In a modification a 3 wire cable links the probe to the measuring circuit, and the electrodes 155, 190 are only used to initiate the measuring cycle.
