Abstract
1,128,446. Photo-electric turbidity measurement. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. Jan. 3, 1966 [Nov. 26, 1964], No. 48129/64. Heading G1A. The turbidity of a fluid is measured by directing light into the fluid and detecting the light transmitted directly through and light scattered at right angles to the direct path, using respective photocells, to obtain signals which are multiplied together to provide a resultant signal proportional to the turbidity. In the embodiment described, two lamps L 1 , L 2 are arranged on two adjacent sides of the sample cell and two CdS photoresistors P 1 , P 2 on the other two sides. The lamps are arranged in a circuit, Fig. 2, such that at any one time only one lamp is switched on, and that the cell receiving directly transmitted light is connected in the input circuit of an amplifier, and the cell receiving scattered light at right angles to the transmitted beam, is connected into the negative feedback circuit of the amplifier. This causes an effective multiplication of signals from the photo-cells. The lamps and connections of the photo-cells are switched alternately at, say, 5 minute intervals, the output of the amplifier being stored in turn in two capacitors. The stored voltages can then be added to obtain a voltage representative of the turbidity. A difference value of the two stored voltages can be used to trigger an automatic clearing system for this adding arrangement. If monochromatic light sources are used, multiplication of the two stored amplifier output signals may give a more accurate result. A mathematical explanation is given of the dependence of turbidity on the sum or product of the two amplifier outputs, and of the effects of uneven fouling of photo-cells or mismatching of the cells due to unequal fatigue.
