Abstract
1,128,115. 1,2,3,4-Tetrachlorotetralin. KOPPERS CO. Inc. 25 July, 1967, No. 34094/67. Heading C2C. 1,2,3,4 - Tetrachlorotetralin, containing substantially more of the isomer which melts at 182‹ C., is prepared by contacting in an inert atmosphere a solution of naphthalene in an inert organic solvent, at a temperature in the range 20-60‹ C. with approximately two moles of gaseous chlorine per mole of naphthalene while exposing the solution to light. The 1,2,3,4- tetrachlorotetralin so obtained may be hydrolysed by refluxing with water to give 1,4-dihydroxy - 2,3 - dichlorotetralin, which is then heated with excess nitric acid at 70-100‹ C. to give 2 - chloro - 1,4 - naphthoquinone. The 2- chloro-1,4-naphthoquinone may then be treated with chlorine to give 2,3-dichloro-1,4-naphthoquinone. Suitable inert solvents for the naphthalene are, e.g., carbon tetrachloride, chlorobenzene, dichlorobenzene, nitrobenzene, trichloroethylene and perchloroethane.
