Abstract
1,127,871. Explosive and gas producing compositions. RESEARCH CORP. 10 Jan., 1967 [11 Feb., 1966], No. 1252/67. Heading C1D. An ammonium nitrate gas producing or explosive composition, of improved decomposition rate, contains at least 0À05% by weight of a metal in elementary form or as a cation in a compound of the metal, the metal consisting of Cr, Cu, Ag or Ni, and at least one chloride anion per metal atom in excess of the ratio corresponding to the chloride of the metal. Specified metal compounds are copper carbonate and silver nitrate. The chloride anion is introduced as sodium, potassium, or ammonium chloride. The preferred metal content is 1- 5% by weight and the preferred ratio of chloride ions to metal atoms more than 10 : 1. Cellulose, carbohydrate, carbon, or sulphur may be included as oxidizable material and nitrostarch, nitrocellulose, nitroglycerine and T.N.T. as primers or detonators. Thermographic and gas evolution rate tests are described.
