Different fields of information on a document such as a bank or postal cheque are separated by special symbols which are selected to form a code identifying the type of document e.g. " express " or " by telegraph ". The information and special symbols may be in a machinereadable legible font. Examples of document identification are (a) the single occurrence of a particular special symbol; (b) the occurrence one or more times of two or more special symbols; (c) the occurrence one or more times of one or more special symbols within a limited number of fields on the document. Counters may be provided for counting the special symbols individually and in total, the latter for field identification. A desired type of document may be selected by keying in the appropriate code to comparison and logic circuitry to which a character reader is connected.
