Abstract

1,126,580. Vehicle suspensions. WESTERN UNIT CORP. 23 Dec., 1965, No. 54718/65. Heading B7D. The suspension for each axle of a pair of driven axles 14 in tandem arrangement comprises a leaf spring assembly 20, bent to provide a longer, relatively flexible arm 28 and a shorter, relatively inflexable arm 37, the axle being attached to the longer arm by U-bolts 21. The shorter arm 37 is connected to a bracket forming the lower support for an air spring 45 and to a transverse stabilizing arm 40 linking the suspensions on opposite sides of the vehicle and to which a pair of hydraulic vibration dampers 50 are connected, the dampers being upwardly inclined towards the centre of the vehicle. At its forward end, the longer arm 28 is located between a rubber covered bolt and a bearing boss 31 mounted on a bracket 29. A radius spring leaf 60 is clamped between the axle and the leaf spring assembly at its rear end and is connected at its forward end by means of a casting 62 to a rubber bushed bolt 63 supported in the bracket 29. The pneumatic spring 45 is connected to an air pressure supply through a levelling valve 70 operated through links 71 and 72. Alternatively, several air springs may be controlled by a common valve.
