Abstract

1,126,579. Glutamic acid. MERCK & CO. Inc. 15 Dec., 1965 [5 Jan., 1965; 29 Nov., 1965], No. 53275/65. Heading C2C. A continuous method for the production of L-glutamic acid uses two or three vessels placed in series relationship. The first vessel is used as a growth-stage vessel in which biotinrequiring strains of L-glutamic acid-producing micro-organisms are grown at a constant rate on a continuously replenished medium containing biotin or a precursor or analogue thereof having similar growth promoting properties. Culture broth from the first vessel is fed at a constant rate to a production stage vessel or successively to transition and production stage vessels where growth inhibiting conditions are applied either by deplenishment of nutrient medium or by simultaneous introduction of growth inhibitor along with further nutrient medium. Continuous aeration and agitation are also applied at this stage and growth-inhibited culture medium is continuously withdrawn and L-glutamic acid or a salt thereof is recovered from said medium.
