Abstract

[Also in Division E1] A brick or other building block is formed from compressed gypsum mixed with a suitable binding agent and is completely encapsulated with an impervious layer of a flexible synthetic plastics material. The binder may be a synthetic resin such as "Araldite" (the word "Araldite" is a Trade Mark). The gypsum binder may be pressed to the required dimensions in known manner, and opposite faces of the brick may be formed with complementary projections and recesses at corresponding positions. These formations may be arranged in one or more longitudinal rows and are conveniently pyramidal. Alternatively the gypsum binder may be forced through a rectangular orifice and suitable lengths cut from the resultant bar by forcing wires through the plastic mass. The building block may take the form of a slab with a rib and complementary groove along opposite edges, and may be moulded with through holes in the thickness thereof so that a wall built from such blocks will be ventilated. The holes may also be used to accommodate reinforcing rods which after erection of the wall can be grouted in position. The encapsulation may be effected by dipping the formed brick in polyurethane dissolved in trichlorethylene. The bricks may be used only for the partition walls of a building and for the inner faces of its cavity walls, the outer faces of the latter being built on conventional bricks and tied to the inner faces in known manner.
