Abstract
1,126,507. Tapping prestressed pipes. INTERNATIONAL PIPE & CERAMICS CORP. 4 Aug, 1966. No. 35039/66. Heaking B3C. A prestressed pipe 10 which may be under pressure, having a concrete tube 11, Figs. 5, 6, wrapped with wire 12 protected by a mortar coating 13, is tapped by first removing the coating to form walls 17, and to expose the tube and wire, applying a hardenable plastics 20 on to the exposed surfaces, curing the plastics material, and cutting a circular kerf of hardened plastics wire and tube, on a diameter 40, 41. The plastics 20 may extend over the coating 13 at 22, so that the gasket 27 of the gland 18 of the machine for drilling through the pipe, bears on the plastics, Fig. 5, or the gasket (127), Fig. 7 (not shown), may bear on the plastics inside of the opening in the mortar. The plastics may be applied in two steps. A priming coat of liquid, is brushed on, and an inert material e.g. silica is then trowelled on over the liquid. The machine for drilling comprises a saddle 24, Fig. 6, attached to the pipe by straps 25, a chamber 34 which can be pressurized through an inlet 31, and a drill 19, 38, rotated by a machine 33. The drill has tips 49, 50, Figs. 9 and 10, having side and end cutting edges which cut chips of different forms.
