To increase the rate of production of the tubular knitted fabric on a stationary circular cylinder machine the cam profile operating on the butts of the needles is as shown in Fig. 7 wherein from a horizontal clearing level 52 the needles are rapidly lowered initially to take the yarn following which their downward movement is retarded as at 56. At the stitch drawing point 57, 59 their vertical movement is increased and thereafter they are immediately raised over a short distance at substantially the same rate as that at which they previously immediately drew their stitches and this rate corresponds to their lowering rate at the point 55. Following their stitch drawing movement the needles are raised at a reduced rate as at 62 until they attain the stitch clearing level 65. A guard arm 51 ensures that the needles are at clearing level prior to knitting. The machine is composed of four circular heads 12 mounted on a base plate 11 each cylinder 31 being mounted on a stationary flange 30 secured to the base plate and secured to the flange by a screw 32, Fig. 3. An outer sleeve 72 is rotatably driven by the provision of an integral V shape bead 121 which receives a belt drive from a variable speed pulley. The outer sleeve 72 supports a ring screw 88 from which depends an inner sleeve 70 carrying the needle cams. The inner sleeve is keyed to the outer sleeve for vertical movement but also to rotate therewith such that rotation of the ring screw 88 causes the vertical adjustment of the inner sleeve and hence variation in the quality of the fabric. The yarn is supplied from bobbins and is fed through guide tubes in the latch ring 25 which is supported from the sinker head of the machine.
