Abstract

In order to prepare a gas burner supply valve arrangement for operation a knob 22 is rotated to screw a shaft 17 into engagement with a diaphragm hub 10 to align the locking pin 19 of a push-rod 12 with slots in a member 16 and the shaft 17; the diaphragm 1 defines two chambers 3, 4, open to the throat of a twopart Venturi 5 in a water system to be heated by the burner, and atmosphere, respectively. The Venturi has an adjustable inlet throttle. Upon depressing the rod 12 it abuts a further rod 11 and unseats a spring-loaded discclosure 13 to allow gas flow to a pilot burner 51 ; the pilot flame heats a thermo-couple 15 which energizes a solenoid 14 that holds open the Closure 13 and enables the rod 12 to be released. The shaft 17 may now be rotated to lift it from the diaphragm 1 whereupon any flow of water in the system causes a pressure drop across the Venturi and hence in chamber 3, the resultant upward movement of the diaphragm opening a closure member 7 to supply gas to the main burner. The gas flow is controllable by rotation of knob 22 whilst upon failure of the water supply a spring 38 seats closure member 7. In a modification, the solenoid valve control knob and push-rod are dispensed with.
