Abstract

1,125,941. Erasers. E. V. THOMAS. 16 Sept., 1965 [16 June, 1964], No. 24854/64. Heading B6P. An erasing device for use in erasing typewritten matter comprises an eraser member 15 mounted on the end of a rotatable spindle 5, and a resiliently displaceable support 16 extending beyond the eraser member 15 and adapted to engage a typewriter platen to provide a yielding support and guard for the erasing device. The means for rotating the spindle 5 includes parts 2 and 7 having co-acting coarse screw-threads so that longitudinal movement of one part parallel with the axis of the spindle 5 produces rotation of the spindle. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 4 and 5), the resiliently displaceable support comprises a two-toed foot (37), the eraser member passing between the toes to contact the paper. The spindle carries a spur gear (32) which is rotated by longitudinal movement of a part (44) carrying a rack (48), at right angles to the axis of the spindle. In a further embodiment (Fig. 6), the arrangement of the eraser member and resiliently displaceable support is similar to that of Fig. 1. The spindle carries a spur gear (53) which is driven by a rack (67). The eraser member, which is replaceable, may be of an abrasive nature similar to glass or sandpaper or emery-cloth, or may be formed with very fine cutting edges. The erasing device may be pivotally linked to a bracket slidable along the bail-bar of a typewriter, or may be built into the typewriter and operated by its own key.
