Abstract

1,125,754. Electric alarms. OASIS TECHNICAL INVESTMENTS Ltd. 6 April, 1966 [14 April, 1965; 11 Jan., 1966], Nos. 16123/65 and 1333/66. Heading G4N. Alarm apparatus comprises two panels 10, 11 sealingly united together to entrap a cavity 12. The pressure in cavity 12 is less than atmospheric and holds inoperative a switch 21 in an electric circuit incorporating alarm means. The panels 10, 11 may form part of a wall, window, door, floor, or ceiling. Switch 21 comprises a diaphragm 30 secured between plates 22, 27 by an insulating and sealing medium and having a contact 31 engageable by an adjustable contact 35 on a threaded pin 34. Pin 34 is adjustable in a stud 24 which secures switch 21 to a bush 17 provided in panel 10. A space 29 in switch 21 communicates, via a hole 32 in plate 22 and a groove 19 in bush 17, with space 12, the upper side of the diaphragm being open to atmosphere via holes 36. Brass pins 37, 38 extend from plates 22, 27 respectively and serve to connect switch 21 to a relay controlling an alarm system. Switch 21 is pre-set with contacts 31, 35 closed. When the partial vacuum in space 12 is destroyed diaphragm 30 pulls contact 31 from contact 35 breaking the electric circuit and releasing the relay to operate the alarm system. Panels 10, 11 may be provided with spacing means such as wire netting 13. In a modification, shown in Fig. 5, the spacing means are flexible porous pipes 61 and the cavity in which the pressure is less than atmospheric is formed by a bag 60 of plastics material housing the pipes 61. Bag 60 is shaped to fit around a projection 62 on a wall 63. In a further modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the evacuated cavity may be formed in mutually interconnected non-porous pipes (65). Several double panel structures 10, 11 may be connected in series with a vacuum reservoir (90), Fig. 7 (not shown), associated with a pressure-sensitive switch (91).
