Abstract

1,125,036. Thermocouples. SIEMENS A.G. 12 May. 1967 [17 May, 1966], No. 22262/67. Heading H1K. A thermopile, consisting of semi-conductive thermo-electric bodies 4 linked by conductive bridges 3 sandwiched between a pair of heat exchangers 1, is assembled with the bridges 3 in thermally conducting but electrically insulating contact with the exchangers 1 by a process in which a sealed anodizing layer 2 is deposited on the heat exchangers and the bridges are formed by printing metallic layers on to the anodizing and then heating to " burn in " the deposited metal. The anodizing layer has a thickness of not more than 100Á and it is sealed by ingestion of boiling water. After sealing, the anodized layer is dried by heating at 200‹ C. and then a first deposit of silver paste is printed on to the anodizing and burned in by heating at 500 degrees. A succession of such layers are formed and the composite silver layer may constitute the bridges. However, it is envisaged that a layer of gold or platinum, similarly formed, may overlie a first silver layer and the final layer may be of chemically deposited copper. The heat exchanger is of aluminium and the anodizing is produced by anodic oxidation in an oxalic acid electrolyte, and after formation of a required pattern of metal bridges on the anodizing by the above described process, the semi-conductor bodies 4 are soldered to the bridges.
