Type-lever machines; letter-spacing mechanism.-A universal bar 27<1> mounted on the shift segment 32 for the type-levers 5 is arranged to actuate a tappet 23 secured to a vertical rock-shaft 14 carrying escapement dogs 21. As shown, the universal bar is supported at the front by an arcuate slot in the segment and is provided with a horizontal frame which is guided on a bracket 31 on the segment and is formed with a finger 29 for actuating the tappet. The finger is made long enough to engage the tappet in both shift positions. The type-levers are formed with flats 27 for engaging the universal bar. Case-shift mechanism; shift-key actions. - A lug 40 on the shift-key lever 41 is provided with a roller 39 engaging a lever 36' which is slotted to engage a pin 38 on the segment. The shiftmovements are limited by the engagement of a fixed stop 36 with adjustable stops consisting of nuts 34. 35 mounted on a threaded rod on the segment.
