Abstract

1,124,546. Cold separation of gas mixtures. LINDE A.G. 30 March, 1967 [31 March, 1966], No. 14519/67. Heading F4P. In a gas mixture, e.g. air rectification process wherein feed air issuing from a compressor 1 is freed of high-boiling impurities, e.g. carbon dioxide by condensation in reversible heat exchangers 2, 3 and 4, 5 or alternating regenerators cooled by cold product gas returned by a column 15, a portion of partly purified feed air is tapped at 6 from the on-stream exchanger 4 and is further cooled in the shell space of a heat exchanger 8 of the non-reversing tube type by heat exchange with a minor portion of cold purified air having left the cold end of onstream exchangers 2, 4, and traversing the tubes 10 of exchanger 8, and the shell space is periodically purged of condensed carbon dioxide by interrupting flow of cold air through tubes 10 whilst maintaining flow of the tappedoff air stream until the condensate is evaporated and discharged into the atmosphere through a valved line 19. During normal operation the cold air leaving tubes 10 at 12 is mixed with air leaving the shell space in a chamber 11 and is added to the major portion of cold purified air in a line 9, expanded in a turbine 14 and fed to the column 15, reboil for which is obtained by diverting some of said major air portion prior to expansion of 14 and passing it through a boiling coil at the base of the column. A duplicate heat exchanger 8 may be provided to maintain continuity of rectification.
